Original 1947 Associated Press wire photo documenting the grim recovery effort following the Capital Airlines crash that killed all 50 people aboard. Stretcher bearers carry the covered body of one victim into the chapel at Leesburg Union Cemetery in Leesburg, Virginia, early on June 15. Recovery crews had worked continuously through the night after the airliner struck the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charles Town, West Virginia. The photograph captures the exhausting and somber work that followed one of several major American aviation disasters during 1947. The original caption is separate from the photo. Please note the tape on the corners, corner paper loss, creasing, discoloration, and surface wear from age and newspaper use. Measures approximately 8 x 6¾ inches. From the archive of a Pittsburgh-area newspaper.
