Original 1947 AP Wire Photo dated April 10 showing an aerial view of the Schooley shaft of the Knox Coal Company near Exeter, Pennsylvania, after a mine explosion. According to the caption, the blast killed at least nine miners and injured nine others as miners and relatives gathered around the shaft opening. The shaft entrance is visible in the tall structure near the center of the image. The caption is separate from the photograph. Please note tape on the corners and age-related wear.
