Original 1947 AP wire photo shows three P-80 Shooting Star pilots comparing notes beside a jet at Andrews Field, Maryland, after setting unofficial speed records during the Air Forces' 40th anniversary. The caption, printed on the photo and dated August 1, names Lt. J. R. Howard, who flew from Miami in 2 hours, 1 minute, 2 seconds; Maj. Donald E. Griffin, who flew from Chicago in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 40 seconds; and Capt. A. J. Meancon, who flew from New York in 24 minutes, 15 seconds. One pilot is still wearing flight gear while another holds notes. Tape remains on the upper corners and overlaps portions of the caption along the lower edge. Some fading, edge wear, and light surface marks are visible. Measures approximately 5¼ x 7½ inches. From the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
