1947 AP wire photo shows Paul H. Griffith, national commander of the American Legion, raising a gavel as he prepares to open the organization's 29th annual convention at Madison Square Garden in New York City on August 28. Wearing his Legion cap and uniform, Griffith stands at a lectern beside a Mutual microphone. The original typed caption is printed directly along the bottom of the photo. The print measures 5⅜ x 7¼ inches and comes from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper. Discoloration and wear affect portions of the caption, especially at both ends. There is also a discolored area at the upper left and a small brown spot on the uniform. Light scuffs and handling wear are visible across the surface and edges.
