According to the original AP caption, Loomis traveled from Long Beach, California, intending to surprise his wife, only to learn that she had already left for California to surprise him. The photograph captures the understandably dejected sailor seated on a doorstep beside his suitcase. Original AP caption is printed directly along the bottom of the photograph. Photo is mounted on black archival paper with period tape and shows expected age and newsroom/archive handling wear. Overall size approximately 6½ x 9½ inches.
