Original 1947 AP wire photo shows House Speaker Joseph W. Martin Jr. raising both hands to a cheering crowd in Fall River, Massachusetts, on August 20. The caption printed on the photo says supporters gathered for a nonpartisan testimonial and clambake in his honor. Martin, legally next in line for the presidency, told reporters he did not expect to seek the 1948 Republican presidential or vice presidential nomination. Tape remains at the corners, with small areas of emulsion loss near the upper left and in the lower caption area. The print shows warm discoloration, light scuffs, and edge wear; portions of the caption are faint. An AP stamp and period handwriting appear on the reverse. Measures approximately 4⅞ x 7 inches. From the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
