Original 1947 Associated Press Wire Photo showing the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Iris battling the massive fires that followed the Texas City Disaster of April 1947. The attached caption identifies the vessel pouring water onto the burning dock area as enormous columns of smoke rise from the devastated waterfront. The Texas City explosions and fires remain among the deadliest industrial disasters in American history. This photograph is mounted to black scrapbook paper and measures approximately 8¾" x 8¼" overall. It originated from a large scrapbook archive assembled and retained by a newspaper near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Moderate age-related wear, edge wear to the scrapbook mounting paper, and handling marks are present. Please see photos.
