This vintage 1978 press photo is 7½x10". It features Gregory Wittine, a 23-year-old from Baldwin, New York, who successfully campaigned to change the Boy Scouts of America's (BSA) age policies for disabled scouts. Wittine, who had cerebral palsy and used a wheelchair, spent 11 years earning the 24 merit badges required for the rank of Eagle Scout. He gained national attention after the BSA initially refused to award him the rank because he had not completed the requirements before the standard age cutoff of 18. The resulting public outcry and advocacy by Wittine and his scoutmaster, Richard N. Golden, led the BSA to issue a historic policy change on May 5, 1978. Please see photos.
