Original 1947 Associated Press wire photo measuring 9¼ x 6¾ inches. The original caption is printed directly on the front of the photograph. This image shows some of the 205 U.S. Navy aircraft flown to Buffalo, New York, on September 16, 1947, to escape a powerful hurricane threatening the Atlantic coast. Aircraft were relocated from Anacostia, Norfolk, Squantum, and Chincoteague, while additional Navy planes were dispersed to Syracuse and Rome, New York, as a precaution against storm damage. A fascinating Cold War-era military aviation photograph. From the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
