This sale features an original antique 1866 stereoview Albumen photo card (7x3⅜"). It is titled "The Altar" (also known as the "Bridal Altar") from the series Magnesium Light Views in Mammoth Cave by Photographer Charles Waldack. Produced in 1866, these are significant for being the first high-quality photographs taken underground in any cave. The image depicts a cluster of massive stalactites and stalagmites that have joined together to form columns, a formation historically called "The Altar" due to its resemblance to one.
