Original 1947 AP Wire Photo showing pilot Ivis Hill of Houston, Texas flying a Lockheed P-38 Lightning during qualifying for the Thompson Trophy Race at the Cleveland National Air Races. The attached AP caption states Hill exceeded 350 miles per hour while circling the pylon course during qualification on August 28, 1947. A striking in-flight image of the famous twin-boom P-38 Lightning, one of the most recognizable American aircraft of World War II. Measures approximately 8" x 6⅜". Reverse bears Associated Press Wirephoto ownership stamp. From a large newspaper archive assembled and retained by a Pennsylvania newspaper near Pittsburgh. Condition shows newsroom handling wear, light creasing, mounting remnants, edge wear, and age-related imperfections consistent with archive storage. Please see photos.
