The image shows the aftermath of a major freight train derailment in Meadville, Pennsylvania on August 7, 1947. According to the original AP caption, at least 26 cars of a 66-car freight train derailed on the main line of the Erie Railroad, tearing up hundreds of feet of track. The photograph captures overturned and wrecked railcars bearing Chesapeake & Ohio and Chicago & North Western markings. The original AP caption remains attached beneath the photograph. This photograph originated from a large newspaper archive assembled and retained by a Pennsylvania newspaper near Pittsburgh. Exhibits expected age, handling wear, corner mounting remnants, and minor imperfections consistent with newspaper archive use. Please see photos.
