The image shows the wreckage of a U.S. Army B-25 aircraft that crashed on a farm near Champaign, Illinois, on May 21, 1947. According to the original AP caption, the aircraft was en route from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Chanute Field in Rantoul, Illinois, when it crashed, killing all seven soldiers aboard. The wreckage was reportedly not discovered until the following morning. Dated 1947. The original AP Wirephoto caption remains attached beneath the image. This photograph originated from a large newspaper archive assembled and retained by a Pennsylvania newspaper near Pittsburgh. Mounted on black scrapbook paper from the archive.
