1947 AP Wire Photo dated August 2 in New York, capturing Colonel O'F winning the Mars Handicap at Jamaica race track during the final meeting of the Saratoga Association. Owned by Claud C. Tanner and ridden by Eric Guerin, Colonel O'F runs along the rail at left, beating Pick Me Up, with Joe Renick aboard, by a head. Our Tommy, ridden by Nichols Combest, finished third; the remaining horses are unidentified in the caption. The action scene shows the closely grouped horses and jockeys with a large crowd watching from behind the fence. Measures 8½ x 6¼ inches. The original caption is printed directly on the photo. Yellowed tape remains on the corners and overlaps parts of the caption. The image is quite light, with pale highlights. From the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
