Original 1947 AP Wire Photo showing Major Robert Crisson of Birmingham, Alabama, looking across Utah Beach in Normandy from a rusted operations boat on the eve of the third anniversary of D-Day. According to the separate original caption, Crisson had led an infantry company ashore in the first wave of the June 6, 1944 invasion. He stated that of the 600 men in that first wave, he knew of only seven who ended the war alive. Crisson commanded Company C, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division. Photograph and separate caption are mounted together on black archival paper. Measures approximately 8¼x8¼ inches overall. This photo came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
