Original 1947 Associated Press wire photo showing a massive explosion and fire at the Cartier Chemical Co. soap plant in Lachine, a suburb of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The original caption describes the dramatic smoke formation as an "atomic bubble" recalling the appearance of an atomic mushroom following one of several explosions that completely destroyed the facility. Large quantities of chemicals used in the manufacture of soap were reportedly destroyed in the disaster. The original news caption remains attached. This photograph originated from a large newspaper archive assembled and retained by a Pennsylvania newspaper near Pittsburgh. Measures approximately 8 x 8¼ inches. There is edge wear, handling wear, and minor damage to the photograph and attached paper backing consistent with age and newspaper archive use. Please see photos.
