Original 1947 AP wire photo shows a U.S. Navy D-558 Sky-Streak jet over the measured course at Muroc Army Air Base, California. The separate caption, dated August 20, reports that the aircraft unofficially surpassed the world speed record that day; this image shows a practice run made two days earlier. It names Cmdr. Turner Caldwell as pilot and gives the standing record as 623.8 miles per hour, set the previous month by an Army P-80 jet. The original typed AP caption is included separately. Yellowed tape remains on the photo's corners. Visible toning and light surface wear are present, with a conspicuous white loss or scuff near the upper right edge. An AP stamp is on the reverse. The photo measures approximately 7⅞ x 6 inches. From the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
