1947 AP wire photo shows Navy Cmdr. Turner Caldwell of the Bureau of Aeronautics speaking to newsmen in Los Angeles on August 20 after an attempt to break the world airplane speed record. He gestures as he describes the D-558 Skystreak jet run. The caption printed directly on the photo states that the Navy had not yet determined his exact speed; the Los Angeles Times reported an estimate of 634 miles per hour, exceeding the record set by an Army P-80 jet the month before. Measures 6½ x 9 inches. From the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper. Yellowed tape remains at the corners, with a small patch of emulsion loss at upper left. White scuffs or areas of image loss also appear on his right sleeve, with light surface and edge wear. The caption shows discoloration and tape near its ends.
