According to the original caption, Smith was found hanged in his cell at the Anacostia Naval Receiving Station in Washington while awaiting court-martial on charges of running amuck and killing nine shipmates as they slept aboard LST-172 in the Yangtze River near Shanghai on April 23, 1946. The caption identifies the image as an AP Wirephoto reproduced from a U.S. Navy photograph. Measures approximately 3⅝x8 inches.
