Original 1947 AP wire photo showing eighteen-year-old Coast Guard Seaman First Class Jessie E. Jarvis of Portsmouth, Virginia. Jarvis became seriously ill with acute appendicitis aboard the cutter Bibb while it was returning from the North Atlantic rescue of sixty-nine people from the downed Bermuda Sky Queen. He was transferred in darkness by open boat from the sister ship Duane. The caption is printed directly on the photo. Measures approximately 3¾" × 8¾". Tape remains on the corners with expected age-related wear. From the archive of a Pittsburgh-area newspaper.
