Original 1947 AP Wirephoto showing an anti-Soviet protest at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Michail S. Vavilov, identified as First Secretary of the Russian Embassy, reaches for one of four derogatory signs placed on the embassy lawn, including "Beware Spies Working." At right, Don Lohbeck, one of two men who posted the signs and said they represented the Christian Youth of America, leaves the grounds. The separate original caption is mounted below the photograph on the same piece of black archival paper. Overall size measures approximately 8¾ x 6 inches. Shows tape, age, handling wear and newsroom/archive use as pictured. This came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper. Strong early Cold War, Soviet espionage and political protest subject matter.
