Original 1947 AP Wirephoto showing a ship at Probolinggo harbor on the northeast coast of Java as fires rage through nearby port installations. Smoke from burning areas fills the background, while the vessel pictured escaped damage. The original caption states that the image was transmitted from Singapore to London and then retransmitted by radio to New York. That long-distance transmission is reflected in the photograph's noticeably low image quality, coarse detail and tonal loss. The caption is printed directly on the photo. An AP stamp is present on the back. Measures approximately 8½ x 6⅜ inches. Old tape remains on the corners, with expected age and newsroom/archive wear. This photo came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
