1947 AP wire photo shows 14-year-old Charles Horton Jr. smiling from a hospital bed as he thanks Navy veteran Leo H. Berger, 20, for saving his life in St. Louis, Missouri. According to the September 3 caption, Horton was holding his left arm outside a bus window when a passing streetcar severed his forearm the previous day. Berger held a tourniquet on the boy's arm for 20 minutes while they traveled by ambulance to a hospital. In the photo, Horton reaches around Berger's shoulder as they speak. The AP caption is printed directly along the bottom of the 6¾ x 9⅛ inch photo. From the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper. The print has light scuffs, small marks, and edge wear; the caption is somewhat faded but readable.
