Original 1947 AP wire photo shows three Canadian youths canoeing at St. Louis after traveling more than 3,000 miles. The caption printed on the photo identifies Jacques Flahault at left and brothers John and Michael at center and right. They followed the route of Father Marquette and Louis Jolliet and planned to continue down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. Dated August 11, 1947, it shows the paddlers with a bridge behind them. Mounted on black archival paper, with yellowed tape at the upper corners and lower caption corners. The print is very light and warm-toned; the caption is faint, with small areas of surface loss near its lower corners. Scattered marks and age wear are visible. Overall mounted size approximately 6⅞ x 9 inches. From the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
