According to the separate original caption, approximately 17,000 employees had walked out as part of the nationwide telephone strike. After being soaked by persistent rain, the picket is shown wearing a cardboard box covered with strike notices while continuing along the line. The separate caption is taped directly onto the bottom of the photograph. Measures approximately 7¾x6½ inches. Note the aged tape, visible surface cracking/emulsion wear along the right side of the image, and typical newsroom/archive handling wear. This photo came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
