Original 1947 AP Wire Photo showing U.S. Navy sailors standing beside massive floral displays prepared in New York for the arrival of American World War II dead returned from Europe. According to the caption printed directly on the photograph, the floral pieces were assembled at a Hudson River pier and were to be floated in New York Harbor as the Army Transport Joseph V. Connolly arrived carrying the first group of war dead home from Europe. Two destroyers were scheduled to escort the transport into New York Bay. The photograph is mounted on black archival paper and measures approximately 9x6½ inches overall. Note the aged tape and typical newsroom/archive handling wear. This photo came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
