Original 1947 AP Wire Photo showing a flag-draped casket bearing the unidentified remains of a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient moving in procession along Fifth Avenue near 29th Street in New York City. According to the caption printed directly on the photograph, the procession formed part of the city's tribute to American World War II dead returned from Europe aboard the Army transport Joseph V. Connolly. The ship arrived carrying approximately 6,200 dead for reburial in U.S. military cemeteries. Measures approximately 6x8½ inches. AP stamp on the back. Note the aged tape on the corners and typical newsroom/archive handling wear. This photo came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
