According to the original caption, six people were killed when the six-car St. Louis Special piled up after twin locomotives derailed and plowed into an embankment. One locomotive nearly buried itself in the earth. None of the passenger cars overturned, and only three passengers were reported injured. The separate original caption and photograph are both mounted on the same piece of black archival paper. Overall size measures approximately 7¾ x 6¼ inches.
