The handwritten letter, dated August 8, 1863, was part of the Lincoln collection opened to the public at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., on July 26, 1947. The image preserves Lincoln's handwriting and signature as reproduced for newspaper distribution. Original AP caption is printed directly along the bottom of the photograph. Period tape remains attached at the corners. Measures approximately 6⅜ x 8⅞ inches and shows expected age, surface wear and newsroom/archive handling. Came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
