Original 1947 AP Wire Photo showing members of the Fifth Marines smiling from the windows of a train as they leave Peiping, China. According to the separate original caption, their departure marked the end of roughly half a century of U.S. Marine duty in the ancient Chinese capital. Written prominently on the side of the rail car is "NO MORE CHINA DUTY! DING HAO!" with the caption explaining that "Ding Hao" was the Chinese equivalent of "That's Great!" The photograph and separate caption are mounted together on black archival paper. Measures approximately 8¾x7¼ inches overall. Note the aged tape and typical newsroom/archive handling wear. This photo came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
