Original 1947 AP Wirephoto showing a spectacular freight train derailment in Gary, Indiana. A freight car from the Chicago, South Shore & South Bend electric line was derailed on a trestle and left dramatically perched against a bridge support. The bridge carried the electric line over the Pennsylvania Railroad main line, creating an especially striking railroad wreck scene. The separate original caption and photograph are both mounted on the same piece of black archival paper. Overall size measures approximately 7½ x 7 inches. Shows tape, age, handling wear and typical newsroom/archive use as pictured. This came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper. Strong railroad disaster imagery with multiple historic rail lines represented.
