Original 1947 AP Wirephoto documenting rescue operations following the ditching of the Bermuda Sky Queen flying boat in the Atlantic on October 14. Lifeboats are shown being lowered from the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Bibb as crews prepared for another trip to the disabled aircraft, with several previously rescued survivors visible aboard the cutter. The original caption identifies this as the first photograph of the rescue operation released by the Coast Guard. The caption is separate and mounted partly over the lower edge of the photograph, with both mounted on black archival paper. Measures approximately 8¼ x 7 inches overall. Shows vintage tape, age and newsroom/archive wear. This photo came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
