This antique 1/6 plate daguerreotype features a striking portrait of an older gentleman posed with his hands resting on a cane. The brass mat is marked JENKS BROS, identifying the image as the work of the Jenks Brothers daguerreotype studio of Paterson, New Jersey. Jonathan B. Jenks operated as a daguerreian at 89 Main Street, Paterson, N.J. from 1855-1860, with the business listed as Jenks Brothers alongside Robert V. Jenks through 1859.
The image is housed in a pressed wood case with a geometric and scrollwork "Gothic" style design to the exterior. The case retains both its hinge and latch. The daguerreotype still shows remnants of its original paper seal, though it is no longer fully sealed.
The portrait itself has excellent presence and contrast with strong detail to the sitter's face and clothing. There are scattered specks, light wipes, edge tarnish, and typical age-related wear visible under close inspection. The velvet pad is worn from age. Please review the photos carefully for condition.
