Original 1947 AP Wirephoto showing the aftermath of a Southern Pacific derailment near Salem, Oregon, on September 27. According to the original caption, a locomotive passed over an open switch, derailing nine cars of the West Coast Limited. The dramatic elevated view shows passenger cars scattered at sharp angles along and beside the railroad tracks. No one was reported critically injured. The original caption is separate from the photograph and unusually mounted off the side of the image with vintage tape. Photograph itself measures approximately 5¼ x 6¼ inches. Shows expected age, toning, tape residue, edge wear and newsroom/archive handling. This photo came from the archive of a Pittsburgh area newspaper.
