Original 1/6 plate daguerreotype portrait of a gentleman dating to the 1840s. He is shown with neatly combed hair, prominent sideburns, and a large patterned cravat. The portrait has pleasing contrast and sharp facial detail, with a few small spots present on the plate from age. Housed behind an early brass mat with its original brass preserver in a full pressed wood case covered in embossed material. The floral designs on the front and back differ, suggesting the case is likely a marriage. The spine shows an old repair, both original latches are present, and the image has been professionally resealed. A handwritten note identifying the sitter as Mr. Andrew S. Coffin accompanies the image and references his marriage to Sarah L. Purinton of Avon, New York. The note is included as found. Please see photos.
